I think this is the strongest of your new batch. You really have to be careful and don't get stagnate with your idea. Make sure they go as a series and that none get boring. -sky
I'm confused about what exactly you are trying to convey by your artist statement. Are you wanting to give the feeling of emptiness around your subjects or are you trying to just place a blur on the background? If you are trying to show the feeling of emptiness, maybe instead of using a bouquet of flowers, which defiantly gives off a happy, love feeling and maybe try a rotting rose or a wilting orchid.
I am definitely enjoying the photos. They are some of the best I've seen so far in the class. I'm just kind of confused as to which direction you are going with your artist statement.
The photos are beautiful. I agree with Christine though. They don't really convey a sense of emptiness. I can understand where you're going but the word empty has so many connotations that it's hard to get away from that sense of empty longing, that I think we're expecting from the pictures. I have no idea if that makes sense. lol!
With what your artist statement is saying, I think there needs to be more going on in the background that is blurred. If the picture is taken close up of your subject, you don't have much background. I still think your first picture is your strongest. I can't wait to see more!
i agree with sarah and christine so i wont just repeat what they said. im not sure what kind of camera you have or if you can get ahold of a camera with a decent lens, if you can, try getting a natural blurred out background by working with the depth of field etc. If you are going for the look you have right now, then go for it, but when you photoshop the blurred background in(aka "bokeh"), it is less subtle than natural blur due to the lasso marks. anyways, i like the idea, just keep working on the execution, and if you are working with a point and shoot, thats fine, maybe borrow a decent SLR camera? i think it will be very worthwhile
The flower photos throw me off and leave me confused. The idea of having one person in the photo with the blur gives us an idea of how complicated our lives are. I would also like to see just sepia or color to keep the viewer's imagery conflicts at a minimum.
You do have a little solidifying to do. Either revisit your statement to describe what it is that these images are doing, or try some other types of image making to better convey the idea in your statement. Keep plugging away, you will get there.
I think if you are trying to truly convey the idea of everything being blurred except for the subject and vise versa, that you really need to work with your camera settings more and have the background (or whatever you choose) to be very blurry. The images are good though. Maybe the statement needs some work to be compatible with the images or the other way around. Looking good though.
I'm loving the picture of the little girl!! :D I am a little confused with your statement. From reading it, to me, it seems like the pictures should convey isolation or emptiness, but they are beautiful, uplifting photographs. I would just keep playing around with it. Keep up the good work!
Right now I think the two strongest photos are the very first and last ones which both happen to have the same color tone actually. I agree with some other comments that your artist statement is a little confusing because some of your pictures don't seem to quite go along with what it says. You are deffinately starting to head down the right path for the photos though I think with the way the last picture turned out. Can't wait to see more next week!
your photos are really well shot, but i do not feel they are fulfilling your artist statement. i would suggest maybe giving more air around your subjects so that we can literally see everything around them that is a blur. alex
In my mind I sometimes feel like I am the only one that exist in the world and everyone else is a blur. Other times I feel that I am the blur and another object is standing out and is noticed among everything else. I will be photographed in public or alone and and appear as if I am the only person in that surrounding. I will also be taking photographs of other subjects that captivates me and focus only on it with everything else a blur.

ReplyDeleteI don't think the flower photos are going to work. I think just you is strong enough. Like that both female subjects are sepia tone.

ReplyDeleteI would concentrate on either the photos of you or the photos of other subjects. I'm having a hard time seeing them all together in one book.

I agree your statement and your images have conflicting ideas...
